Westgate is a busy ward containing the commercial centre of the city, as well as a number of residential areas including St Thomas and Leazes Village, New Mills, Diana and Mary Street estates, the Westgate Multis, Summerhill, Rye Hill, parts of Elswick and many properties in the city centre and quayside. Nick is supported by a Cabinet made up of councillors with specific responsibilities for individual areas of the Council's business. The Fire and Rescue Authority services the population of Tyne and Wear. It aims to safe lives, reduce risk, provide humanitarian services and protect the environment. As well as managing 17 Fire Stations, it runs a number of preventative services to protect people and property against the risk of fires. Nick is Vice Chair, and works closely with the Chief Fire Officer to oversee the Authority's finances, integrated risk management plan, corporate policy and performance management arrangements.

Labour Party policies are decided by the National Policy Forum, which is a group made up of constituency representatives, trade unions and parliamentary spokespeople. Nick is one of the four elected constituency representatives from the North East, and attends meetings regularly to consider what policies the Party should adopt. In this role Nick works closely with Labour Leader Ed Miliband, and Shadow Cabinet ministers in Parliament.
