Westgate ward includes the commercial centre of Newcastle as well as the residential areas of St Thomas and Leazes Village, New Mills, Diana and Mary Street, Summerhill, Rye Hill, parts of Elswick and many properties in the city centre and quayside. The ward stretches from the Tyne Bridge as far west as Elswick Pool and as far north as the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Educational facilities include four primary schools, two nursery schools and Sure Start Westgate Children's Centre. Newcastle University is also situated in the ward. Health facilities include the Royal Victoria Infirmary as well as a number of GP practices.

There is a wide range of shopping, leisure and entertainment opportunities including Eldon Leisure, Leazes Park, the City library, many of the City's museums and St James Park.

Westgate ward is served by both Newcastle Central and Newcastle West area Police Commands, with St James Boulevard being the boundary between the two beats. Westgate is also served by New Deal for Community Street Wardens.
