Evening City Centre parking charges to be scrapped
7 July 2010
The City Council is proposing to scrap charges for parking in its car parks in the evenings, following lobbying by local businesses and residents.

The Council has recently announced a consultation process to provide free car parking between 5 and 6pm, and remove the existing evening charges of 25p per hour between 6pm and 8am all days. This would only apply to the Council-operated multi-story car parks, and on-street pay and display parking would not be affected.

Nick welcomed the move, saying: “This is great news for shoppers, local businesses and residents. The Council has hiked up parking charges for the city centre in recent years, and I've raised concerns previously about people being deterred from coming into the city centre and choosing places like the Metrocentre, where there is free parking, instead. I'm delighted that there's been a change of heart. This will also help city centre residents, who were angry at being hit with new evening parking charge two years ago when the 25p per hour rate was introduced.”
